I am not your Guru

I recently watched the Tony Robbins Documentary on Netflix titled: I Am Not Your Guru. Tony travels to 12 countries a year seeing over 200,000 people annually. Once a year in the USA, he holds a 6-day work shop called: Date with Destiny at a cost of $4,999 a person. The documentary is based on both his personal life and one of his 6-day workshops. Never having read or watched anything and knowing very little about him, I wasn’t sure what to expect but it was fantastic! The language is a bit rough but he explains the reason behind why he uses it and the behind the scenes of his personal life are quite impressive.  Here are some of my takeaways from the documentary:

Every day work harder on yourself and break the pattern so you can reclaim who you really are.

The beliefs, values and rules that control the way we think, feel, and behave are like weeds that need to be ripped out. Get to the source and then change it. His goal in the seminar is to have a breakthrough so your entire life changes and you become the person you were destined to be.

From a very personal stand point, my life had a “breakthrough” moment in February of 2017. It was the moment that I knew I was at a cross roads in my life. On that day, I knew my marriage of almost 42 years was over and that I had to have the courage and take that first step to make a change, and I did.

Out of pain comes strength. My spiritual and inner strength has grown tremendously in the last few years since I left my marriage. Once you have been to the darkest, scariest places you can now go to the highest places, and by doing so, you can take your power back to be who you are meant to be.

We ALL get what we tolerate!

If I am going to live the life I want, I ‘m not going to tolerate anything inside myself that is less than I can be, do, share, or give. For me, it has been therapy, reading many self-help books, youtube videos, seminars, podcast, webinars, and anything I can find to put the hard work into myself so that I can be healthy, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally. I have also joined the Big Sister Program and just waiting on the program to pick the right “little sister” for me.

Heal the Boy and the Man will appear.

It was about your parent of origin whose love you craved the most and also about relationship fears. As a child, you might have felt that if you weren’t enough, then you would not be loved. From that thought, we then learn to hide behind our truest self and are not able to be the person we were made to be. To make a relationship work takes unbelievable courage and unselfishness.

Most of us are unaware of the patterns that are really controlling us.

What do I need? What do I really want at this stage of my life? I need to sculpt myself into what I am capable of being instead of what life and circumstances have provided. After over 45 years, I have finally started dating again!  Not easy to teach and old dog new tricks but dating again has been both exciting and a bit frightening. Watching the documentary inspired me to really set my goals and not let fear control me in this new chapter and approach dating with Tony’s advice, “if we lead with love and caring, then we find the way”.

Stay in your head, you’re dead.

Questions control what you focus on.  What you focus on is what you feel, and what you feel is your experience of life. Life is a journey that has all kinds of discoveries, and we don’t want to miss out. Bring your desires, hunger, love, and caring. Leave behind, your fears, limitations, frustration, and your past. Design your life or you will miss out.

So, at this new stage in my life, I have taken up two new hobbies:  pickleball and petanaque. After playing tennis for over 30 years, it was time to give it up and try something new. With much hard work, love, and support from my family as well as therapy and seeking guidance and wisdom from my faith in God, my life’s path has changed and far exceeded any expectation that I had. One of Tony’s statements was: "Never give up.  Pure will keeps you going."  I can certainly attest to that!

I will end with this thought-provoking statement from the documentary and my goal for my own life:

What is your extraordinary life? Really live what you want and don’t settle for less.
